California: Republican Steve Cooley Concedes Race For Attorney General To Kamala Harris

Sacramento, CA: Republican candidate Steven Cooley has conceded defeat
to Democrat Kamala Harris in the state's prolonged race for Attorney
General. Cooley trails Harris by an estimated 50,000 votes. According
to California state law, all election votes must be counted and
submitted to the Secretary of State's office by December 3, 2010.

カリフォルニア州サクラメント: 長期に及んだ州検事総長選で、共和党スティー
ブ・クーリーが民主党カマラ・ハリスに敗北を喫した。クーリーはハリスに凡
そ 50,000 票の差を付けられた。カリフォルニア州法で定められているように、
2010 年 12 月 3 日までに全ての票を集計して州総務長官に提出する事になっ
ている。

Cooley, who had served as District Attorney for Los Angeles, gained
only 39 percent of the vote in his home county.

In recent months, Cooley had threatened to prosecute area dispensaries
that engaged in cash sales of medicinal cannabis, claiming that the
facilities did not meet the legal definition of 'collectives' or
'not-for-profit' entities under the state's medical marijuana
guidelines.

過去数ヶ月の間、クーリーは大麻を現金販売している地域ディスペンザリーを
摘発すると脅していた。そのような施設は州の医療大麻ガイドラインに規定さ

San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris has previously voiced
support for protecting the legal rights of patients who use cannabis
medicinally, stating, "We will not prosecute people who use or sell
marijuana for medicinal purposes."

サンフランシスコ地方検事であるカマラ・ハリスは以前、医療を目的として大
麻を使用する患者の法的な権利を守る事について次のように支持を表明してい
た。「我々は医療目的で大麻を使用もしくは売買する人々を起訴するつもりは
無い。」

Steph Sherer, Director of Americans For Safe Access – which had
campaigned against Cooley in the weeks prior to the election – called
Harris an "ally" and said, "A defeat for Steve Cooley is a tremendous
victory for (medical marijuana) patients."

選挙の数週間前までクーリーへの反対運動を行っていた "Americans For Safe
Access;（大麻への）安全なアクセスのための米国人の会"、その会長であるス
テフ・シェラーはハリスを「協力者」と呼び、次のように述べた。「スティー
ブ・クーリーが敗北した事は、（医療大麻を使用する）患者にとっての非常に
大きな勝利だ。」
